WELCOME TO ENNO'S WEBPAGE
Hi! My name is "Enno" (pronounced 'enn-Oh') and I am the Police Service Dog for the Hoquiam Police Department. I was born January 8, 2003 in Germany. I spent my puppy years learning the basics of being a police dog. In 2005 I was purchased by the Landheim Training Academy in Dyer, Indiana and flew to the United States where I continued my training with Master Trainer Bob Fleming and all the great folks at Landheim.

In late 2005 the Hoquiam Police Department decided to re-institute its dormant K-9 program. Officer (now Sergeant) Jeff Salstrom was selected to be the handler and he drove all the way to Indiana. There were seven other police officers in the class and I picked him to be my partner. We spent six weeks training together at Landheim, coming home to Hoquiam on Christmas Day 2005.

HIGHLY TRAINED TEAM
We are trained as a dual-purpose K-9 team for patrol work and narcotics detection. I am trained in tracking, area search, building search, criminal flight apprehension, and handler protection. I am also trained to locate five different kinds of illegal drugs; Marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and LSD.

Sergeant Salstrom and I have achieved certification from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission as a K-9 team and we are also accredited by the Washington State Police Canine Association and the North American Police Work Dog Association. We train nearly every day to be the best we can be.

A SPECIAL THANKS
When it comes to training, I have to give a special thanks to several people: Deputy Rob Crawford of the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office, Officers Steve Timmons, Wayne Schmidt, and Dale Green of the Aberdeen Police Department, Corporal Kevin Miller of the Port Angeles Police Department, and the late Officer Kristine Fairbanks of the United States Forest Service. They all get four paws up in my book!

Besides being the K-9 team for the City of Hoquiam, we also assist all the neighboring agencies when requested. We are available for call-out 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have our own assigned patrol car that is specially equipped for me. Our first capture of a criminal was for the Aberdeen Police Department, locating a suspect who was burglarizing the South Shore Mall Sears store. That suspect is currently in prison after being convicted of that crime and several other burglaries. Since that time we have been responsible for the capture of 29 criminals who would not have been located without our assistance. We have also located a considerable amount of illegal drugs, resulting in the seizure of approximately $50,000 in cash and assets. Our biggest drug find so far has been 14 pounds of processed marijuana with an estimated street value of $28,000.

IN LOVING MEMORY
On September 20, 2008 my good friend and trainer, Officer Kristine Fairbanks, was murdered in the line of duty. Kris was shot while investigating a suspicious vehicle on a Forest Service road outside of Sequim, WA. Kris leaves behind her husband Brian and 15 year old daughter, Whitney, along with her K-9 partner, “Radar.” She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Kris was a motivated canine handler and trainer. She worked with three dogs over the course of her career, Ruger, Hero, and Radar.

Kris was posthumously awarded the Washington State Police Canine Association Medal of Valor, the first human to be given this award. It was previously only awarded to police dogs injured or killed in the line of duty. Sergeant Salstrom and I owe much of our success to her efforts and assistance. We will honor her memory by working hard to be the best canine team we can be.

A DOG'S LIFE
When I'm not at work I live with Sergeant Salstrom. My favorite toys are any kind of ball and an Extreme Kong™.
